Will filing for bankruptcy wipe out my legal fees and lawsuit?

I’m being sued by my neighbor about a property issue. If I lose the case, I may have to pay $30K. I can’t afford this. Will filing for bankruptcy wipe out my legal fees and lawsuit?

  1. You can discharge the judgment and/or your counsel fees in a chapter 7 bankruptcy assuming you qualify. There are limited grounds for exceptions to a discharge. They mainly have to do with fraud, bad faith and certain types of debts. These can be found in bankruptcy code 523. Hopefully you can settle this matter with terms that you can live with and avoid bankruptcy.
