Can the credit card company chase me in Thailand?

I am a US citizen. Born there and spent 30 years moving across the country. Last year I left to move to Thailand. I don’t think I’ll be moving back and I don’t want to keep paying my credit card bill from the debt I incurred while living in the US. What happens if I just stop paying the bills every month, can the credit card company chase me in Thailand to collect? Should I declare bankruptcy in the US only? I am self employed here and I don’t want anything to affect my current living situations or business.

  1. I seriously doubt that a creditor would pursue you in foreign country. I have never heard of such a thing. Also there are complicated jurisdictional issues when you relocate to a different state and in your case a country. It is beyond the scope of this website but in my opinion you need to contact an attorney from the state in which you departed without delay if you want to file bankruptcy. There are residency requirements.
