If one spouse is in financial crisis, the other working can one spouse file bankruptcy?

If one spouse is experiencing financial difficulty (credit card debt in his name only, dental debt, etc.) can he file bankruptcyand it not affect the other spouse? Will paperwork have to be filed with spouse’s information?
