Future husband filed bankruptcy 2003

My credit is excellent; obviously my future husband's is not.
Once we are married; I change my name, will this previously filed bankruptcy of his effect my credit?

1 Comments:

  • Your husband's bankruptcy does not affect your credit; you each have a separate credit report. Just because you get married to someone does not mean that their credit score becomes your credit score.

However, if in the future you both attempt to borrow money jointly, such as purchasing a car or house, the fact that he was previously bankrupt will make it harder to borrow, because he will not be as good a co-signor for you as compared to someone who had never filed bankruptcy. Your credit is not affected, but he is not as good a co-signor, so future borrowing may be more dependent on your credit score.
