According to Equifax.com, the largest credit reporting agency in North America, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy remains on your credit report for 7 years. The Equifax web site says: "Matters of public record obtained from government sources such as courts of law -- including liens, bankruptcies, and overdue child support -- may appear on your credit report. Most public record information stays on your credit report for 7 years."
Be aware that a Chapter 7 bankruptcy can remain on your credit report for 10 years. I'm not sure why, but I filed a Chapter 7 in March of 1997 and it is still on my credit report. At the time, I was told it would remain for 7 years. Many sources that I have found report that it is 10 years. There are two schools of thought on this, but I'm here to tell you, mine is going on 10 years.
